Private Instruction: Beginning Weaving, Floor Loom

$425.00

Dates TBD per student
Located in Milton, Delaware
~4 miles from downtown
Location disclosed after registration

Learn to weave with Rachel Haas, a professional handweaver, one-on-one in her studio, on an 8-shaft Schacht Baby Wolf floor loom, using cotton weaving yarn. Students will learn about yarn selection, project planning, reading drafts, designing, warping, setting up the loom, weaving plainweave and twill variations, troubleshooting issues with ease, and suitable finishing techniques for their project. Rachel has experience teaching over 30 beginner students of all backgrounds at Haywood Community College in Clyde, NC. Students leave with their own unique handwoven textiles!

There is a lot of material to cover and in this class we will go through warping and setting up the loom only once so we have enough time to weave a sampler and then continue on to create a placemat or dishtowel depending on student’s pacing. Students will likely need to finish their raw edges and perform the final step of “wet-finishing” their project at home. This is a low-pressure environment. Mistakes, note-taking, and questions every step of the way are encouraged!

Whether you are looking to begin a journey as a weaver thereafter, or just looking to try weaving for the experience, this is for you!

No experience is necessary. Tuition includes the cost of materials.

Contact Rachel before purchasing to secure class dates.

Note that we do have cats!

ACCESSIBILITY

If you are concerned about accessibility, please contact me. There is a steep ramp and a short set of stairs at the entrance. There is a sandy driveway and a sliding door, which may be difficult for a wheelchair or other mobility aids to navigate, but I am happy to help assess if we can meet your needs.

Weaving requires the ability to raise your arm/shoulder at least 90 degrees, to be standing or seated for somewhat long periods of time, using legs/feet to pedal, and to learn forward/reach while sitting and standing. Some adjustments can be made to make the process more ergonomic and breaks are encouraged.
