Rachel Haas is a weaver, spinner, dyer, and seamstress living in Delaware, where she has a one-woman textile studio in her home. She is a graduate of Haywood Community College’s Professional Crafts: Fiber Arts degree program in Western North Carolina under the mentorship of Amy Putansu. She lived in WNC for five years as an artist, educator, and production assistant to fiber artist Jude Stuecker before returning to her home state after the devastation of Hurricane Helene.
Rachel’s work is primarily handwoven, naturally dyed items for the home and apparel. She uses only natural or certified organic fibers and often recycles studio “waste” materials into usable products such as handmade paper or natural watercolor paints. She also grows a dye garden and enjoys foraging for materials. A large part of Rachel’s mission is to encourage a consumer consciousness shift toward thoughtfulness, earth connection, and ultimately fewer mass-produced, petroleum-based products.
She began teaching professionally in 2021 at Haywood Community College in the Continuing Education department and has introduced over thirty students to weaving on a floor loom, with several students continuing to the two-year degree program. She continues to host workshops out of her home for anyone interested in having a fun, hands-on experience or looking to dive deeper into the world of textiles.
Rachel has exhibited work in galleries such as the Southern Highland Craft Guild Folk Art Center in Asheville, NC and The Bascom in Highlands, NC. She was an integral participant in the Local Cloth Blue Ridge Blankets Project as a weaver and has given presentations at both Local Cloth and The Center For Craft in Asheville, NC. She loves sharing skills and empowering students of all backgrounds to learn craft and believes it can be a powerful ally for mental health, happiness, and creative freedom.
