10 am-3 pm both days

Private Residence in Milton, Delaware
~4 miles from downtown
Location disclosed after registration

Always wanted to try your hand at natural dyeing but not where how to start? If you want to learn how to dye like a professional (make dyes that last), build a beginner laboratory, geek out about plants, brew like a witch, or just have fun learning with a group of kind folks, this is for you!

In this two-day workshop we will cover the basics needed to build a foundation in dyeing cellulose and protein fibers using roots, resins, extracts, powders, or whole plant material. There will be lectures and plenty of hands-on experience. We’ll be working with cotton flour sack towels/napkins and small wool skeins of yarn. This is aimed to provide you with beautiful cloth to take home and use as you wish or save for your new dye library. We won’t be doing indigo in this class, so if you are looking specifically for that, please check out my Indigo and Shibori workshop!

Our learning environment celebrates diverse learning styles and welcomes all skill backgrounds and desired learning outcomes. Whether you are here to play or want to dive deep into procedure, you are welcome.

We will take a lunch break around noon. There are restrooms on site, a garden, and cats and chickens.

Learning Outcomes:

-Cellulose vs protein fiber

-Tools/equipment needed for a home lab

-Lab safety 101

-Scouring textiles

-Tannin/Mordanting

-Preparing a dye bath

-Resist techniques, if desired

-Post-mordanting

-After care

REQUIRED TO BRING:

-Notebook for record keeping

-N-95 Mask

-Wear “play condition” clothing in case of spills or splashes

-Personal lunch, snacks

OPTIONAL:

-One pair of regular dish gloves that will only ever be used for dyeing. There are gloves on site, though fit is not guaranteed.

-Eye protection, if you wish

-Sun protection

ACCESSIBILITY

If you are concerned about accessibility, please contact me. There is a steep ramp and a short set of stairs at the entrance. There is a sandy driveway and a sliding door, which may be difficult for a wheelchair or other mobility aids to navigate, but I am happy to help assess if we can meet your needs.
